Omaha Family Dining Week

My family and I LOVE going out to eat. With all the amazing restaurants Omaha has to offer, why wouldn’t we?

However, there’s something to be said for enjoying meals at home with your family around the table. Family dining not only means eating at home together, but cooking together as well. Admittedly, when we do dine in, the preparation falls mostly on my husband. I am not the cook in the family. However, we all contribute, such as dad cooking the meat (we love Omaha Steaks), mom preparing a salad, and Olivia putting the cups and napkins on the table.

Our biggest struggle when it comes to eating at home is a family is planning ahead. Making a meal plan and sticking to it (even if that means a meal out to one of Omaha’s delicious restaurants), can save time, money, and maintain healthy eating habits. It’s really easy to get fast food when you haven’t thawed the chicken or shopped for fresh ingredients for what’s on the menu. Believe me, I have done it.

Live Well Omaha Kids in connection with the City of Omaha is celebrating Omaha Family Dining Week, October 19-25. Families are encouraged to take the pledge to dine in more as a family this week to help save money, eat healthy, and enjoy family meal time together. After doing so, entrants have chances to earn prizes such as a family membership to the YMCA, four pack of tickets to the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo, and Hy-Vee gift cards!

I have been making a weekly to-do list – usually containing what I’m going to pack today for our upcoming move. This week I included our meals. That should help a lot!

I am excited to try eating every meal at home. I’ll meal plan my toddler’s favorite foods and use fun shaped pastas as cookie cutters (for things like bread and cheese)

I don’t mind cooking but it gets boring making the same meals all the time. I need to put more time into planning and looking for new recipes my family will like. And since my kids can be picky, it gets even trickier!

It can be tough, but there are tons of great resources out there!

I completely agree! I hate when my husband works the opposite schedule as I do. I miss having dinner with him!

I have already planned meals for this week since we took the pledge. I am also taking a Meal Planning class this week to help give me better ideas!

Yep took the pledge. Everyone is contributing to each meal, picking out a veggie, main dish, fruit and dessert. We are also doing a family game or Q&A during the weekly dinners.

We always cook at home, so I pledged seven days a week. Our favorite meal to have, or at least prepare, is homemade pizza. The main reason is because that is one food that the kids can actually help make. I think that will play a large role in our family dining week.

I love homemade pizza! I know it’s not “homemade”, but my daughter loves the build-your-own kid’s pizza from Papa Murphy’s! It’s delicious too!

I pledged! I cook at home often but I need to get my kids more involved. Will make that a goal!
