5 Healthy Ways for Moms to De-stress

Being a parent is never easy, and the stresses of taking care of a little one paired with the responsibilities life throws at us can be overwhelming at times. It’s easy to get caught up in those stressful, anxious feelings, so it’s important to remember that there are healthy ways to cope with them. Whether it’s getting in exercise or making time to hang out with friends, here are 5 healthy ways for moms to de-stress!



It’s difficult to be a parent when you feel unorganized. Sit down with a calendar and make a plan for each day of the month; events, birthdays, homework due dates. Write down everything you and the kids have coming up. It might be helpful to keep each individual family member’s tasks in a particular color on the page.

Planning doesn’t end there; you can plan meals for the entire week if it will save you time and hassle later. Sunday nights are the best time to spend an hour or two preparing ingredients for a week’s worth of meals, which you can keep on separate trays in the fridge so you can grab it, throw it on the stove, and have a homecooked meal that doesn’t take a lot of time. Hit up Pinterest for ideas on things the kiddos will actually eat.

If mornings are a problem, create an area near the door for everyone’s backpack/shoes/coat. This will be a game-changer when you’re running behind, the bus is trundling up the street, and the kids are rushing to finish breakfast.

Take care of yourself

Getting in daily exercise, eating well, and pampering yourself now and then are highly beneficial in clearing out stress. It may seem impossible to do during the course of your busy day, but it’s important to try and find the time. Go for a walk with the family after dinner, or hit the local pool and swim a few laps. Taking the time to make sure your body and mind are in good shape will help you be the best version of you.

Take up a hobby

Find something that makes you happy and get to it. Gardening, drawing, writing, playing a sport, or simply reading a book are all great ways to spend time that’s just for you. Making sure you have your own identity is crucial, especially on the days when you’re in Mom-mode from sunrise to bedtime.

Find the music

Sometimes, you just have to dance. Listen to your favorite music in the car during rush hour or while you’re making dinner. The sounds we love can help us stay in a positive mood and can affect the way we react to things, meaning you might not be quite so irritated when the dog tracks in mud again.

Get social

It’s important to maintain a healthy social life, and having a strong support system of friends and family can help you focus on the good things when stress threatens to derail everything. Spend some time with your mom, grandma, or a close friend who is a mother figure and make an effort to learn from them. Opening up about our frustrations and fears can go a long way in becoming the kind of parent we want to be.

Parenthood doesn’t come with an instruction manual, but remember there are ways to navigate through it without losing your cool.
