Meal Planning with Mom Saves Money and Omaha Steaks

I have one major struggle when it comes to eating right.

Poor planning.

It’s so easy to pick up some fast food or eat a bowl of cereal (I know, I know) instead of sit down for a healthy, balanced meal.

Luckily, I was able to attend a meal planning class with Mom Saves Money, Nicole McDonald, at Omaha Steaks.

Nicole had us list seven meals that we cook on a regular basis.

Knowing that you have some regular meals in rotation that aren’t necessarily to-go meals, makes it easier to envision a plan.

Depending on your shopping and cooking style, you can meal plan for a week, biweekly, or even monthly. Freezer cooking, where you prepare meals for an entire month and freeze them for later, is becoming very popular.

Here are a few tips I learned at the class.

1. You can freeze shredded cheese! This is perfect when I am able to find bargains from couponing (just like Nicole taught me in her book).
2. Keep only your favorite cookbooks. Too many can be overwhelming. Scan or tear out the pages that you use if they are minimal. Donate the rest!
3. Do not throw your meal plans away! Put them in a binder. File them digitally. Remember what you loved to use them again.

The class I attended was held at Omaha Steaks, so I was able to shop for some very affordable meals while I was there!

My new favorite is the chicken fried chicken, but I also LOVE Omaha Steaks seafood items. Oh, yes they are more than just red meat!

We actually eat out a lot because of our hectic schedules. I would love to prepare meals at home more regularly.

I don’t have a strategy I kind of eat what I want when I want it. I do tend to make a lot of pasta/noodle type dishes and steak–I love steak. Yes, I have ordered from Omaha Steak in the past–their steaks are delicious.

We LOVE it in Omaha, but I have friends and family out of state that love them just as much! I worked for Omaha Steaks as an outbound sales rep for years, and we had customers all over the country order steaks. Check and see if there is a store in your area, or go to The deals are tremendous. You can even sign up for their Steaklovers Rewards program to get even better deals! It’s free!

I love the tip to get rid of cook books! I have a whole shelf I only ever use for one or two recipes, I need to rip out pages and purge!

    • January 11, 2015 at 9:05 pm

Isn’t that perfect?! It seems so obvious, but I didn’t even think of it!
