Can babies catch anything from cats?
You and your children are unlikely to catch a harmful parasite or disease from your cat. Ensure that your cat is regularly wormed (talk to your vet about this) and that you and your children wash your hands after handling your pets, particularly before eating.
Can babies get toxoplasmosis from cats?
The infection toxoplasmosis is caused by the Toxoplasma gondii parasite. Cats are the usual host for these parasites, but children, adults, and other animals can also be infected.
Can babies get sick from pets?
Infants and children younger than 5 years old are more likely to get sick from germs that animals can carry. This is because young children often touch surfaces that may be contaminated with animal feces (poop), and they like to put their hands in their mouths.
What happens if a baby eats cat poop?
Unless the child or animal was sick, eating a small amount of poop is not toxic. Cat litter is not a problem in small amounts. It can become a choking hazard or can cause a blockage in the intestines if larger quantities are eaten.

To determine whether a fetus has been infected, a doctor can take a sample of the fluid around the fetus (amniotic fluid) and test it for antibodies to the parasite and for the parasite’s genetic material (DNA).
What does toxoplasmosis do to babies?
Toxoplasmosis can cause problems during pregnancy, including miscarriage, preterm birth or stillbirth. Most babies born with toxoplasmosis have no symptoms. Symptoms can include eye infections, swollen glands, liver or spleen, or jaundice.
